i love that we can wake up at our home in the mile high mountain town of idyllwild and 50 minutes later be in the pool at the ace hotel palm springs on the desert floor :)

sometimes in order to sh*t or get off the pot, someone's got to scare the sh*t out of you. in my case, it was jessica surprising me as we started their family session with our digital cameras locked and loaded with the question "can you shoot film instead?" uuuuuuuuuuuummmmm, sure? I think? ya? I mean, I've been shooting film for 15 years...I learned photography on it, I love it, I intentionally photograph everyone I love and care about on it. for some reason, probably because I'm a big sissypants, I've always reserved film for me and mine and digital for anyone who paid us dollars. so these cameras and films that inspire me to the core stay at home when I'm out "working." but damnit, every time i head out to shoot I'm inspired by who's in front of me, and through our little bit of time together, I fall a bit in love with them. so why not use what I love on these new friends I'm blessed enough to get paid to spend time with? so anyway, back to jessica and her amazing family and her sh*t scaring question...in fact I did have some film cameras in the car that were left there in favor of our digitals...so off I went to grab some. since we were in nashville for a wedding, I was traveling light on film gear for personal shooting and ended up grabbing my new to me fifty year old minolta autocord TLR to shoot with. now, I'll be the first to admit, a slow as hell-hard to compose with everything backwards-hard to load-hard to focus-medium format camera is not the ideal choice for shooting two adults and two little kids who move faster than my hands could ever hope to focus. I love limitations when shooting...it's part of why I love film and old cameras. with these limitations, admittedly there were a lot of pictures I didn't / couldn't take, which is fine by me, that only makes the ones I could take that much more special. by the end of our hour together I took 28 frames and out of that I have 15 frames that I am deeply proud of. I'm not sure exactly what that afternoon with jessica, her family, her sh*t scaring invitation, and this little film experiment will manifest itself into... but I sure am excited to see :)
